DOORWAYS comic series from George R.R. Martin

Acclaimed novelist and Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of The Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin, has teamed up with IDW Publishing, to release an all-new miniseries, entitled DOORWAYS. Based on his pilot script for a television series that never was, DOORWAYS offers Martin’s science-fiction genius in an initial four-issue series. Martin and artist Stefano Martino bring this reality-bending tale to life starting in November.

"DOORWAYS was the great 'what if' of my career, the television pilot that was right on the edge of being greenlit to series... but in the end was not. I spent a year and a half of my life with Tom and Cat, writing about them, thinking about them, making plans for their adventures. It broke my heart when it all came to naught,” said Martin. “But now, at last, thanks to IDW and the talent of Stefano Martino, the world will get to share some of those adventures. And even better, the comics format will allow us to do things with the story and the visuals that we would never have been able to do on television! I couldn't be more excited."

Every issue of DOORWAYS treats Dr. Tom Mason, and fans, to the very definition of terrifyingly incredible, as doors open to worlds that are twisted mirror of ours. Said DOORWAYS editor Mariah Huehner, “One of the most interesting is a world with no oil. Which is pretty timely.”

DOORWAYS follows Dr. Tom Mason on a multi-dimensional journey as he tries to solve the mystery of Cat, a strange, feral young woman who pops up in his E.R. one night, injured and barely able to communicate, except by ripping off limbs.

Wearing rags that nearly disintegrate, Dr. Tom is drawn in the girl’s strange fears, until he discovers that “Cat” is a person of interest to the government, and a very odd group of “people” that don’t seem to be from around here… “here” being our dimension…

“Working with George on this project is a lot of fun,” continued Huehner. “It’s a dark sci-fi/fantasy, that’s not unlike the Twilight Zone in terms of taking an ordinary person and suddenly confronting them with very bizarre events and people. Tom is a total “good” guy, loves his girlfriend, likes his job, and just wants to help people. But when Cat shows up she turns his comfortable world upside down.”

Artist Rebecca Wrigley will provide incentive covers for each issue of the initial DOORWAYS series.

George R.R. Martin’s DOORWAYS #1 (of 4, 32 pages, full color, $3.99) will be available in stores in November. Diamond order code SEP10 0362.

LADY DEATH's origins revealed in new graphic novel

New publisher Boundless Comics is proud to announce the November release of LADY DEATH ORIGINS VOLUME ONE, the first in an exciting new line of graphic novels collecting the historic adventures of Brian Pulido’s beloved femme fatale. This 160-page collection, written by the character’s original creator (and Chaos! Comics founder), features artwork by Ron Adrian and Richard Ortiz, and will be available in softcover, hardcover, and special autographed variant hardcover editions.

Two pivotal storylines from Lady Death’s past are retold in LADY DEATH ORIGINS, providing insight into the heroine’s deep mythology. “Abandon All Hope,” originally a five-issue series published by Avatar Press, recounts the tale of a young woman’s transformation into an avatar of death. An additional tale entitled “Wicked” expands on this origin story, firmly establishing Lady Death against the backdrop of the Blacklands, the mystic realm she would eventually conquer. LADY DEATH ORIGINS will be engaging, essential reading for fans and newcomers, just in time for the launch of the character’s new ongoing monthly series in December.

The pricing and format of LADY DEATH ORIGINS VOLUME ONE is as follows:

· Lady Death Origins Volume One Softcover Edition - $19.99

· Lady Death Origins Volume One Hardcover Edition - $27.99

· Lady Death Origins Volume One Signed Hardcover Ltd. Edition - $34.99

The massive LADY DEATH PREMIERE promotion draws fresh attention to the fan-favorite character, setting the stage for the bold new direction – and apocalyptic-level mayhem – of Boundless’ ongoing comic and graphic novel publications.

Created by indie press icon William Christensen in 2010, Boundless Comics publishes high-quality, action-oriented comics, as exemplified by its initial release, LADY DEATH by Brian Pulido and Mike Wolfer. MOON LAKE horror anthology launched by Archaia and Dan Fogler

Fangs, freaks and fright fill Archaia Black Label’s newly announced horror anthology, MOON LAKE, an original graphic novel hardcover coming October 2010 in association with the diversely talented writer/director Dan Fogler and his company, UNKATUSH, Inc.

MOON LAKE (oversized hardcover, full color, 112 pages, 7.25” x 11.25”, $19.95) is a collection of short horror stories based in and around the titular, haunted body of water, which was the basis of Fogler’s independent horror movie, HYSTERICAL PSYCHO.

“The idea for the graphic novel came from wanting to expand the world of HYSTERICAL PSYCHO,” said Fogler. “The movie takes place up north at the eternally haunted region called Moon Lake. The tone of the film is like Alfred Hitchcock on acid meets EVIL DEAD, so I thought, why not do HITCHCOCK PRESENTS on acid, or TALES FROM THE CRYPT on crack, or TWILIGHT ZONE on THC…you get the picture. MOON LAKE is an anthology telling the hysterically horrific tales of Moon Lake from prehistoric times through today and into the possible future. Not all the stories are funny but they sure as hell are freaky…”

“Anyone who loves 50-foot tall zombie dinosaurs, naked women from the dawn of prehistory, horny sasquatches, secret wars on the lunar surface and learning the truth about how humans were created by aliens who spliced their DNA with the DNA of Earth monkeys, I guarantee that MOON LAKE is the one book that you absolutely cannot miss this year,” said Archaia Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy. “Dan Fogler is one of the most amazing creators I’ve ever had the honor to work with, and I feel so lucky that we’ve been able to bring his vision to life here at Archaia. I’m only sorry that Dan and I will have to wait to share the wonders of ‘Cannibal House’ and ‘Ben Franklinstein’ until MOON LAKE Vol. 2.”

Fogler’s illustrated alter ego, the Man in the Moon—a demonic spoof of Alfred Hitchcock—will introduce each story in the chapter breaks, featuring the art of rising talent Brooke Allen. Fogler will also write a bonus prose story as part of the extras in the back of the graphic novel, with illustrations by Scott Newman (TUMOR).

Joining Fogler will be a group of some of the most talented writers and artists in horror and science fiction comics. Following is a list of the stories appearing in MOON LAKE and their respective creators:

“Camp Sasquatch” short story
(W) Tim Seeley (HACK/SLASH)
(A) Robbi Rodriguez (HAZED)
A group of randy camp counselors has a close encounter of the Sasquatch kind.

“Desensitized Deirdre” short story
(W) R. H. Stavis (DEMONS OF MERCY)
(A) Jeffrey Zornow (GRIMM FAIRY TALES, HALLOWEEN: THE FIRST DEATH OF LAURIE STRODE)
A peppy cheerleader has the worst day of her life, transforming her into a manic mass murderer.

“Black Bear Blues” short story
(W) Stef Hutchinson (HALLOWEEN: NIGHT DANCE)
(A) Jim Daly (BAD PLANET)
A spoof of the documentary “Grizzly Man,” in which a man goes out into the wild to commune with grizzly bears—this time, with different results.

“Cave Girl” short story
(W) Brian Holguin (SPAWN)
(A) Tommy Castillo (BATMAN, EVIL ERNIE, TOETAGS FEATURING GEORGE ROMERO)
A prehistoric adventure following the exploits of Cave Girl and her pack of zombie dinosaurs.

“His Final Escape” short story
(W) Nick Tapalansky (AWAKENING)
(A) Alex Eckman-Lawn (AWAKENING)
A Houdini-like escape artist performs one last, fatal stunt in the depths of Moon Lake.

“Moon Wars” short story
(W) Blake Leibel (SYNDROME)
(A) Josh Finney and Kat Rocha (TITANIUM RAIN)
Evoking 1950s, sci-fi B movies, a group of soldiers in high-tech gear battle dozens of Godzilla-like creatures on the dark side of the moon.

“Archaia has put together a great crew,” marveled Fogler. “Each story is a unique puzzle piece that fits together beautifully to create MOON LAKE Volume 1, and in my opinion, the variety of artistic styles throughout the book rivals that of classic issues of HEAVY METAL magazine. My good friend, R.H. Stavis, co-creator of ‘Desensitized Deirdre’—one of my favorite Moon Lake residents—said to go with Archaia because the books they put out are classy and they are extremely creator friendly. And she was absolutely right! I hope to do many more books with Archaia.”

MOON LAKE will be published under Archaia’s new Black Label line of titles, which specializes in co-developing intellectual properties with prestigious partners who are seeking to flesh out and realize their original ideas through the use of Archaia’s resources.

Limited advance copies of the MOON LAKE hardcover will be available at New York Comic Con (Oct. 8-10 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York, NY) and go on sale in October wherever books are sold. To pre-order a copy, use ISBN code 978-1-932386-96-7.

HBO and IDW announce True Blood comic 2nd printing

Comics Based on HBO Hit Television Series Sells Out

Second Printing Available in Stores on August 25th

San Diego, CA (August 18, 2010) – HBO and IDW Publishing are excited to announce that True Blood #1 has sold out! The first issue of this sexy, visually striking comic series launched with huge success at San Diego Comic-Con and comic retailers throughout North America and kicks off the first-ever comic book series based on the hit HBO series True Blood. To meet the continued demand, IDW and HBO are rushing a second printing to stores for a release date of August 25th.

Developed with the show’s Oscar®-and Emmy®-winning creator, Alan Ball (HBO’s Six Feet Under, American Beauty), IDW’s True Blood series is the exclusive, official show comic, adding new and unique layers of supernatural drama to the wildly original Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-winning television show.

True Blood #1 boasted a print run of over 53,000 copies, sold through comic stores and other outlets, and offering multiple covers. IDW and Diamond Comic Distributors also offered exclusive versions of the first issue at San Diego Comic Con, all of which were sold out by the end of the show. The second installment of the series will release on August 18th.

“The passion fans have for True Blood has elevated the series to new heights and it continues to grow as the story unfolds,” states James Costos, VP Global Licensing and Retailing. “With the sell-out success of the comic’s first printing, it is clear that there is an insatiable thirst for different iterations of the television series, and we’re excited to expand the impact of the comic series and get it into even more hands with this second printing.”

Beginning with issue #1, the True Blood comic series offers the same erotically-charged romance, wry humor, intriguing mystery and suspense the show has become known for. In this comic book series, Sookie and many other Bon Temps locals find themselves waiting in Merlotte’s bar for a strangely portentous raging storm to subside. Soon, they discover they’ve been trapped by an entity that feeds off of raw emotions and begins killing off the patrons one by one until his hunger is sated.

The plot was developed with Ball, along with series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and co-written by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner. Beautifully illustrated by top tier artist David Messina, the series captures all the bloody details and sexy reveals of this exciting new adventure. Renowned artists J. Scott Campbell, Joe Corroney, and Andrew Currie join Messina in providing covers for the first issue.

The True Blood comics explore the ongoing adventures of telepathic heroine Sookie Stackhouse, her vampire lover Bill Compton, best friend Tara Thornton, enigmatic and ancient vampire sheriff Eric Northman, loyal boss Sam Merlotte, brother Jason Stackhouse, perpetual-virgin vampire Jessica, and the flamboyant cook Lafayette Reynolds.

True Blood #1 (of 6, 2nd printing, 32 pages, full color, $3.99) will be available in stores on August 25th. Diamond order code JUN10 8172.

True Blood #2 (of 6, 32 pages, full color, $3.99) will be available in stores on August 18th. Diamond order code JUN10 0313.

Pinocchio Vampire Slayer Returns

The Great Puppet Theater Digs Deeper Into Little Wooden Slayer

San Jose, CA - 8/16/2010 - More Lies! More Vampires! More...Puppets.

Pinocchio The little wooden vampire slayer returns in an all new adventure from SLG Publishing. Pinocchio: The Great Puppet Theater features more danger, more deceit, and truckloads more nose-shanked vampire. The much anticipated sequel to critically acclaimed graphic novel Pinocchio Vampire Slayer, follows the little wooden boy's ongoing quest to find and kill the head vampire while he kills as many of his undead minions as he can along the way.

Now with an undead Master Cherry and the addition of his long lost marionette family in tow, Pinocchio might just be closer to getting his greatest wish granted than he ever thought possible. But, WHICH wish? And will Pinocchio's life ever be the same afterwards? Both writer Van Jensen and artist Dustin Higgins raise the stakes as they reunite to continue the story of Pinocchio based on the legendary original version of the story by Carlo Collodi. "Collodi's story is so rich that, if we wanted, we could fill dozens of books up with adventures spinning from his world," says Jensen. "The challenge then really is in choosing the right pieces of his story to incorporate into ours without going overboard. While our story certainly spins off into totally different directions, I like to think it keeps up the tone of Collodi's Pinocchio."

It was midway through scripting the first graphic novel that Jensen had an idea about a larger mythos involving Pinocchio and the vampires. "The trick with that book was to allude to a larger story while keeping it self contained, because we didn't know if it would be popular enough to support a second volume. Thankfully fans really took to the story, and so now we're able to explore this larger adventure."

Volume one of Pinocchio was released to critical acclaimed and praised for its clever use of the concept. Named one of the top 10 Great Graphic Novel for teens by YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Volume one remains in print and has become one of SLG Publishing's great success stories.

Pinocchio: The Great Puppet Theater is a 176 page, $14.95 graphic novel written by Van Jensen and illustrated by Dustin Higgins. Scheduled for an October 2010 release from SLG Publishing Pinocchio Vampire Slayer Vol 2 will be available at better comics and bookstores as well as at Amazon.com and the publisher's own website. A ten page preview appears on the SLG Website.

SLG Publishing to Sponsor Zombie Food Drive

San Jose, CA - 8/17/2010 - SLG Publishing, in a partnership with the San Jose Downtown Association and Starlight Cinemas, will be organizing a zombie crawl on August 25th which will double as a canned food drive for The Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara. Now in its second year, Zombie-O-Rama as it is called takes its name from a comic book published by SLG Publishing.

"Last year's event was a huge success" said SLG president Dan Vado "Our expectation was that we could get maybe 50-100 people to come out, the SJDA estimated attendance as closer to 1000 and for a good part of the evening the entire San Jose Downtown area looked like a scene from Night of the Living Dead." Vado added that the canned food drive was also a huge success as over 6,000 pounds of canned goods were donated "It really is a case of the dead helping the living and proves the point that the secret to surviving an apocalypse, be it Zombies or economic as we seem to be in, is to stick together and help each other out."

The highlights of this years crawl will be a zombie fashion show put on by the Creative Zombie Collective and then an outdoor showing of last year's hit comedy Zombieland. Admission to the event is free although everyone attending is being asked to bring at least one canned food item. The SLG Publishing Gallery will be open at noon on August 25th and make-up artists will be on hand to zombiefy the make-up challenged for a fee depending on complexity.

The rally point for the crawl will be Gore Park at the corners of South First Street and Williams in downtown San Jose with the crawl set to begin at 5:00 PM. More information including the route map can be found at the event website at www.zombieorama.com

Cover revealed for "Return of the Dapper Men", steampunk

ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL FAIRY TALE BY JIM MCCANN AND JANET LEE FEATURES COVER DESIGN BY EISNER AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER TODD KLEIN

Los Angeles, CA (August 11, 2010) – Turning to one of the most well-respected designers in the comics industry to create an elaborate cover for one of 2010’s most anxiously awaited titles, Archaia revealed the final cover to RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN, designed by the award-winning Todd Klein (America’s Best Comics). RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN (with pre-order sales nearing 5,000 units even before official solicitation) is the highly anticipated all-ages title coming from writer Jim McCann (Hawkeye & Mockingbird) and critically acclaimed and award-winning visual artist Janet Lee.

“Having a master designer like Todd Klein on board Team Dapper is a great honor,” said Archaia Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy. “I’ve been talking for months about how special this book is, and how much fun it is as an editor to be working on a fairy tale entirely unlike anything seen in comics before. With Todd joining creators Jim McCann and Janet Lee as we bring Dapper down the homestretch to publication, I can promise readers that this is one of those instances where the quality and artistry of this book lives up to the hype!”

The cover draws in many influences both within literature and without. “We wanted to go for a timeless feel, given both the importance that time plays in the story and the fact that this is a sort of classic fairy tale of old with some modern twists,” explained McCann. Janet Lee’s stunning découpage art is featured prominently in the cover design. “I love the look of books from the turn-of-the-century and classic children’s fiction. I love how they incorporate filigree and natural elements with illustrations that are now iconic,” said an excited Lee. “Todd was able to reference that feel and yet make it very today.”

RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN (hardcover, full color, 128 pages, 9.5” x 11”, $24.95) is a visually stunning fairy tale that combines steampunk with fantasy and science fiction with Renaissance style. Together, McCann and Lee have created a world where J. M. Barrie, Lewis Carroll and Maurice Sendak meet Jim Henson and Tim Burton—all sharply dressed in a pin-stripe suit and a dapper bowler hat!

“Seeing this whole package come together with this level of production and talent involved, along with more surprises to be announced in the coming weeks, is a dream come true,” beamed McCann. “Knowing that Archaia is behind us and recognizing their established high quality production values in their hardcovers makes RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN even more exciting as it gets closer to hitting shelves!”

A limited amount of advance copies of the RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN hardcover will be available at New York Comic Con (Oct. 8-10 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York, NY) and will go on sale in comic shops and wherever books are sold in November. To pre-order a copy, use ISBN code 978-1932386905.

OBLIVION will be directed by Joseph Kosinki and will be produced by Radical’s President and Publisher, Barry Levine, and Kosinski. Radical Studios’ Executive Vice President Jesse Berger is signed on as Executive Producer. Kosinki is repped by Verve and Anonymous Content while Radical is repped by CAA and David Schiff.

In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Joe Kosinski on OBLIVION,” said Barry Levine, president of Radical Pictures. “Joe is one of the most creative forces in filmmaking today. From the moment he teamed with Radical to produce the book and film, he had such a clear vision of the OBLIVION landscape and universe. Add to that Joe’s successful partnership with Disney on Tron: Legacy, and you have all the ingredients for a phenomenal action/adventure film.”

OBLIVION, the 128-page illustrated novel, will be released in Summer 2011 and will feature prose, combined with over 40 fully painted landscape renderings. OBLIVION will be distributed worldwide through Random House.
